Gemology – Sardonyx (SiO₂) is the result of alternating bands of sard and onyx in red, white, orange, brown and black. It is a variety of chalcedony where the top-quality stones have high contrast between each band. Best quality Sardonyx is derived from India; however, it is found in multiple regions of the world. It has a cryptocrystalline structure and is a 6.5-7 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness.
